Music Therapy Internships
Gilchrist offers music therapy internships for qualified applicants who are currently enrolled in a music therapy degree program approved by the American Music Therapy Association.
Music therapy interns work in the Central Maryland community, specifically in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Harford County and Howard County. They work with a diverse population of hospice patients with cancer, end-stage heart and lung disease, kidney disease, ALS and other neurological diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, AIDS, and other life-limiting diseases.
As part of the 9-month music therapy internship, interns will:
- become an integral part of the interdisciplinary team,
- lead individual music therapy sessions,
- perform individual assessments,
- carry a caseload of direct service,
- interact and work with team members from other disciplines,
- participate in an extensive orientation process,
- and assist the program in any way that benefits patients and the hospice community.
In addition, the music therapy intern will attend various trainings throughout the year to further their growth and knowledge in the field of music therapy and end-of-life-care.
Those interested in applying for Gilchrist’s Music Therapy Internships should have functional skills in voice, guitar, and piano and should have some knowledge of hospice, specifically how music therapy is used in the treatment of those who are dying. Some previous clinical work with this population or related field is required.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a music therapy degree program approved by the American Music Therapy Association. They must have completed all their pre-internship coursework and clinical experience prior to the start of the internship and have a recommendation from their academic advisor stating their readiness to begin the internship.
