Hidden Blessings: Finding Light, Love, and Joy Through Illness and Loss

March 24, 2026, Jewish Care and Support, News

Conversations about illness and loss are rarely easy. They are often postponed, softened, or avoided altogether. And yet, when we create space to speak openly about them, something unexpected can happen: we begin to notice moments of connection, clarity, and even joy.

That is the heart behind Hidden Blessings: Finding Light, Love, & Joy Through Illness and Loss, a special community event hosted by Gilchrist on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Har Sinai-Oheb Shalom Congregation.

The evening will bring together two respected local Rabbis and one Cantor for a thoughtful panel conversation about spiritual care, resilience, and the sacred work of accompanying individuals and families through some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

Moderated by longtime Baltimore journalist and author Michael Olesker, the program will feature:

  • Rabbi Benjamin Shalva, Gilchrist’s Manager of Jewish Care, Support, & Rabbinic Services
  • Cantor Alexandra F. Marcus of Har Sinai-Oheb Shalom Congregation
  • Rabbi Joshua Gruenberg of Chizuk Amuno Congregation & Schools

Together, they will share stories from their pastoral work and reflect on what it means to sit with suffering while still making room for hope.

For Rabbi Shalva, whose work at Gilchrist includes hospice counseling, meditation, and Jewish spiritual care, these conversations are not theoretical. They happen every day at bedsides and kitchen tables across the community. “Even in very difficult times — in the midst of serious illness, loss, and grief — we may discover unexpected blessings: moments of love, insight, healing, and connection,” Rabbi Shalva says. “Our Gilchrist Hidden Blessings event brings together rabbis, healthcare professionals, and community members for an honest, uplifting conversation about finding these sparks of meaning — these blessings. It’s an evening of learning and community — and a true opportunity for connection.”

At Gilchrist, those hidden blessings might appear in a final reconciliation between family members. In a song sung softly at the bedside by a music therapist. In the quiet strength of a caregiver who realizes they are not alone. Hidden Blessings is not about minimizing grief or pretending pain does not exist. It is about acknowledging that love and meaning can coexist with loss. It is about offering language and spiritual wisdom for moments that can otherwise feel overwhelming.

The evening will begin with a Resource Fair from 6–7 p.m., featuring community partners including Avila Homecare, AgeWell Baltimore, Compassionate Ally, Jewish Community Services, and Sol Levinson & Brothers, Inc. Guests will have the opportunity to connect with organizations that provide practical, emotional, and spiritual support to individuals and families navigating serious illness. The main program begins at 7 p.m. and will also include music by Gilchrist’s Music Therapy Team, whose presence reflects another way light often finds its way into difficult spaces. This event is made possible through the generosity of The Harvey and Linda Litofsky Family Foundation and is offered at no cost to the community.

In a culture that often rushes past grief, Hidden Blessings invites us to pause. To listen. To reflect. And perhaps to leave with a new understanding that even in life’s most challenging chapters, love still speaks—and blessings, though sometimes hidden, are still there.
