A Life of Service and History: Honoring Coast Guard Veteran David Pearson

At Gilchrist, we have the privilege of caring for individuals whose lives tell remarkable stories—stories of service, love, and moments that have shaped history itself. For Coast Guard veteran David Pearson, that story spans decades of dedication to his country, his family, and his community.

Answering the Call to Serve

Born in Bennington, Vermont in 1932, David graduated from Saints Peter and Paul High School in Miami before enlisting in the United States Coast Guard in 1951. He served as a Yeoman Second Class Petty Officer aboard the US CGC Juniper, a buoy tender based in Key West that maintained critical navigation systems across the region.

After his discharge in 1954, David continued his education at Emory University, where he studied history, laying the foundation for a life that would soon intersect with some of the most significant moments in American history.

A Chance Meeting and a Life Together

During a spring break trip to St. Petersburg, Florida, David met Anne Bates on the beach. That chance encounter turned into a lifelong partnership. The two married in 1960 and built a family together, raising their three children: Christopher, Maggie, and Katie. Their 65-year marriage was filled with shared passions: music, travel, time on the water, and a deep appreciation for the world around them.

An Eyewitness to History

(L-R) Sargent Shriver, President Lyndon Johnson, and David Pearson

In 1962, David began working as a White House information officer, later serving under Sargent Shriver as Deputy Director of Information for the Peace Corps. On November 22, 1963, he was called to the White House to assist during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

That night, David stood in the East Room as the President’s casket returned from Dallas. Amid the shock and grief, he witnessed a deeply personal moment—Jacqueline Kennedy mourning beside her husband, comforted by Robert Kennedy. It was a moment that would stay with him forever. David later continued his service under President Lyndon B. Johnson before transitioning into a career in public relations.

A Life of Purpose Beyond Government

Service remained a constant throughout David’s life. He volunteered his public relations expertise to environmental causes, including work with the Audubon Society, and supported civil rights initiatives and conservation efforts, such as the Save the Manatee campaign.

At home in Coral Gables, Florida, he shared his love of nature with his family—planting fruit trees, tending native plants, and teaching his children to respect and enjoy the ocean through fishing and boating. He was also a lifelong learner and storyteller, authoring a memoir, JFK and Bobby, Arnie and Jack…and David!, reflecting on his extraordinary experiences.

Support When It Matters Most

When David needed hospice care, his family turned to Gilchrist, and the response was immediate. As his daughter Katie shares, “Gilchrist Hospice Care has proven to be a wonderful, supportive, and helpful resource for my family.” Her father, then 93 and recovering from double pneumonia, was cared for in his assisted living community, where, she explains, “he was immediately assessed by Gilchrist, and they provided all the necessary recommendations for palliative care.”

That guidance brought clarity during a difficult time, but it was the ongoing support that made the difference day to day. Katie notes that “they offer a 24-hour nursing staff available to answer any questions, and they also provide chaplain visits,” giving her family both medical support and peace of mind.

The family also found comfort in the special moments created through Gilchrist’s volunteer programs. For David’s 94th birthday, Gilchrist Pet Love volunteer Heather brought her therapy dog, Mateo, to visit him, a gesture that brought joy to David and his family during the celebration.

A Meaningful Tribute Through Gilchrist

Recently, David’s service was honored through a Salute to Service Tribute led by Gilchrist’s veteran volunteers. The ceremony included a prayer, the National Anthem, and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the presentation of a Veterans pin, a certificate of appreciation, a handmade patriotic blanket, and a heartfelt thank-you card from a student. His family was also recognized with Proud Family Member of a Veteran pins.

During the tribute, David received a formal military salute, one he proudly returned, creating a powerful moment of recognition and respect. For Katie, the experience was deeply moving. She shares that it was “an incredibly moving gesture for him and our family.”

Honoring a Legacy

At a time when families often feel overwhelmed, Katie expressed what so many experience with hospice care: gratitude. She shares that she is “incredibly grateful to Gilchrist at this critical time in our family’s life.” David Pearson’s life is a reflection of service in its many forms: military, public, environmental, and personal.

Through Gilchrist’s Veterans program, moments like his Salute to Service Tribute ensure that those who have given so much are recognized, celebrated, and supported. And for families like Katie’s, those moments become lasting memories—ones filled with dignity, gratitude, and connection.
