A Full-Circle Journey: From Gilchrist Volunteer to Geriatric Care Patient
For 15 years, Elaine Gardner gave her time, compassion, and unmistakable sense of humor to Gilchrist patients and families. Today, at age 90, she is experiencing Gilchrist from a new perspective: as a patient receiving home-based primary care through Gilchrist’s Geriatric Medical Care program.
For Elaine and her husband, Kenny, the transition feels like a full-circle moment built on years of trust. “We’ve had really good care,” Elaine says. “I’ve had really good people and really good advice.”
A Lifetime of Caring for Others
Caring for others has never been something Elaine Gardner did only as a volunteer—it has been the defining thread woven throughout her entire life. Born and raised in East Baltimore, Elaine graduated from Patterson Park High School. She and her husband, Kenny, met in ninth grade and married after he returned home from military service. In 2026, they celebrated an incredible 71 years of marriage.
Together they raised three biological children, but Elaine’s family didn’t stop there. Over the years, she welcomed countless others into her life, creating what Kenny affectionately calls her “adopted family.” “I’ve never looked at people as being outside my family,” Elaine says. Whether it was helping raise a niece whom she eventually adopted, becoming a grandmother figure to a young Irish family living far from home, staying connected with an exchange student from Israel and her daughter, or embracing extended relatives as her own, Elaine has always believed that family is built through love rather than biology. “When someone’s in need, I just want to help,” she shares.
That same compassion extended well beyond her own family. Elaine spent 45 years volunteering with the Girl Scouts, mentoring generations of young girls and teaching them the importance of service, kindness, and giving back to their communities. “I’ve always enjoyed helping people,” she says. For Elaine, caring for others wasn’t simply something she did—it became who she was.
From Girl Scout Leader to Gilchrist Volunteer
After spending 45 years volunteering with the Girl Scouts, Elaine wasn’t ready to slow down. Looking for another meaningful way to serve, she found Gilchrist. Her volunteer journey began by helping assemble comfort bags for patients. She shopped for toiletries, blankets, and small gifts to ensure every patient received something both practical and comforting. Soon, her granddaughters joined her, earning community service hours while learning firsthand the importance of compassion. “They thought they would like to do something too,” Elaine recalls. “It worked out really well, and they really enjoyed it.”
What started with assembling care bags grew into 15 years of volunteering with Gilchrist. Elaine visited patients in their homes, occasionally served in two of our care settings, and became a comforting presence for countless patients and families facing serious illness. She remembers how quickly patients would trust her. “They would tell me things that happened in their lives, their relationships, and their families,” she says. “I always felt better when I left. I felt like I did something good.” Elaine understood that even in difficult moments, laughter could be healing. “I tried to be comical,” she says. “I wanted to keep things light. I didn’t want everything to feel so serious.”
Experiencing Gilchrist From a New Perspective
Years after her volunteer service, Elaine experienced a sudden fall while returning home from her niece’s wedding. Doctors discovered an underlying heart problem, and she ultimately received a pacemaker. Elaine later experienced additional falls, and her daughter helped connect her with Gilchrist’s Geriatric Medical Care program.
Today, Elaine receives home-based primary care from Laura Ross, MSN, CRNP, a Gilchrist nurse practitioner. The program allows Elaine to receive medical care where she lives, rather than having to navigate frequent trips to doctors’ offices. Kenny says the care has made a meaningful difference. “We’ve had some great people come in and take care of her,” he says.
Bringing Care Directly to Older Adults
Gilchrist’s Geriatric Medical Care program provides coordinated, compassionate care for older adults living with chronic or serious illnesses. Many older adults find themselves moving repeatedly between home, the hospital and rehabilitation. They may also have several specialists involved in their care without one provider coordinating the full picture.
Gilchrist physicians, nurse practitioners and social workers help patients and families navigate those challenges. For patients who have difficulty leaving home for medical appointments, Gilchrist brings geriatric-specialized primary care directly to them. The care team can assist with:
- Managing symptoms and medications
- Coordinating care among specialists
- Providing advance care planning
- Connecting families with community resources
- Offering emotional and social support
- Helping patients avoid unnecessary health crises and hospital visits
The goal is to help patients maintain the best possible quality of life while giving families greater confidence, guidance and support. For Elaine, receiving care at home offers comfort and reassurance from an organization she already knew well.
Trust Built Over Time
Elaine’s relationship with Gilchrist did not begin when she became a patient. It was built over 15 years of firsthand witnessing the organization’s care. She remembers visiting other hospice organizations while friends were receiving care and recognizing a difference in the atmosphere at Gilchrist. “Gilchrist feels homey,” she says. “The facilities are so nice, and there are doors where you can look outside or go out onto the grounds.”
Her confidence in Gilchrist has remained so strong that Elaine and her family referred Susan, a neighbor and extended family member and friend who lives in their apartment community, to Gilchrist’s Geriatric Medical Care program. That recommendation reflects the trust Elaine and Kenny have in the team caring for them.
