Air Force Veteran John “Rusty” Porter: A Life of Service on the Ground and in the Skies

August 18, 2026, Patient Stories, The Lifecare Institute, Veteran Support

John “Rusty” Porter lived a life defined by service, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to his country and community. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on December 17, 1932, Rusty attended Wakefield High School, where he excelled in football and track. During one memorable football game, he made an extraordinary shoestring tackle that earned him a full athletic scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. There, he studied landscape architecture, lettered in football, joined the Theta Chi Fraternity, and graduated in 1955.

After college, Rusty played two seasons as a defensive back with the Chicago Cardinals before answering another calling—serving his country in the United States Air Force. Following flight training, he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command, flying B-52 bombers during the Vietnam War from U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield in Thailand. During his military career, Rusty received the Air Force Commendation Medal and numerous letters of commendation from the Strategic Air Command, Tactical Air Command, and the British Royal Air Force.

After leaving active duty, Rusty continued serving his country through several years with the CIA before joining the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where he spent 18 years advancing electronic warfare capabilities. He later became Director of Electronic Warfare before retiring from government service in 1984 to establish Rus Porter Associates, an electronic combat consulting firm. Throughout his distinguished career, he earned numerous awards recognizing his contributions to national defense.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rusty was deeply committed to serving others. He and his wife, Virginia, raised six children and cherished their growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Together, they devoted countless hours to Habitat for Humanity and other charitable organizations throughout Anne Arundel County. As a past president and volunteer builder for Habitat for Humanity, Rusty helped provide affordable housing for families in need and was recognized with the Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Keepers’ Award for his community service.

Care Where He Needed It Most

From March through June 2026, Rusty began receiving care at his Senior Living Community through The Lifecare Institute, allowing him to remain surrounded by his loving family while receiving compassionate, expert care during the final months of his life.

The Lifecare Institute provides an integrated continuum of hospice and palliative care for adults living with serious or advanced illness throughout Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties. Through the combined expertise of Luminis Health and Gilchrist, patients receive personalized medical care along with emotional, spiritual, and practical support tailored to their unique needs.

Unlike traditional hospice alone, The Lifecare Institute offers care across every stage of serious illness, including hospice, palliative care, home-based medical care, music therapy, pet therapy, chaplaincy, caregiver support, volunteer companionship, legacy projects, veteran recognition, and grief services. By meeting people where they are—both physically and emotionally—the team helps patients like Rusty live with greater comfort, dignity, and quality of life while remaining surrounded by the people they love.

Honoring Those Who Served

As part of Gilchrist’s Honoring Our Veterans Program, veteran patients are recognized for their military service through meaningful Salute to Service Tributes. These ceremonies acknowledge the sacrifices veterans have made for our country while giving them the opportunity to hear the words “thank you for your service” in a personal and heartfelt way.

Shortly before his passing, Rusty was honored with a Salute to Service Tribute in the presence of his family and friends. The ceremony included an opening prayer, the singing of the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, and patriotic music performed by a retired Air Force colonel, including the U.S. Air Force song. Rusty received a certificate of appreciation, an Honoring Our Veterans pin, a patriotic blanket handcrafted by a volunteer, and a thank-you card created by a local student. His wife, Virginia, was also recognized with a patriotic scarf and a Proud Wife of a Veteran pin. The ceremony concluded with a formal military salute from fellow veterans, which Rusty proudly returned—a fitting tribute to a man whose lifetime of service touched his family, his community, and his nation.

Your Generosity Makes Stories Like Rusty’s Possible

As a nonprofit organization, The Lifecare Institute relies on the generosity of donors to provide the comprehensive care and specialized support that insurance alone does not cover. Philanthropic support helps ensure every patient can receive expert medical care, emotional and spiritual guidance, veteran recognition ceremonies, volunteer services, music therapy, caregiver support, grief care, and so much more—regardless of their ability to pay.

Rusty’s Salute to Service Tribute is one of the many meaningful moments made possible through community support. Every gift helps ensure veterans and all patients facing serious illness receive compassionate care, dignity, and recognition throughout every stage of their journey.

Editor’s Note: Rusty passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026. We are honored to share his story and extend our heartfelt condolences to Virginia and the entire Porter family.
