Daniel Price reflects on being a Music Support Volunteer at Gilchrist Center Baltimore

In 2023, Daniel began volunteering at Gilchrist Center Baltimore, providing music support twice a month. His decision to volunteer was sparked by his mother, Rebekah, who discovered Gilchrist’s music services while visiting a friend at the Towson location. Since becoming a volunteer, she has also dedicated herself to sewing Memory Bears, crafting over 30 bears so far. Inspired by his mother’s involvement and the opportunity to use his musical talents to bring comfort and joy to those in hospice care, Daniel eagerly joined the Gilchrist team.

Daniel’s extensive musical background, which includes a range of genres from classical to jazz and new age, allows him to connect with patients through music that personally resonates with them. He tailors his sessions to the preferences and needs of the individuals he supports, ensuring that the music he plays enhances their experience meaningfully. A particularly memorable moment for Daniel occurred when a hospice patient, deeply moved by his music, insisted on giving him a small token of appreciation. Although Daniel initially declined the gift, the patient’s insistence deeply touched him, highlighting the reciprocal nature of kindness and connection and showing that patients have a profound capacity to give even in their final days. In addition to his volunteer work, Daniel is currently studying music therapy at Lesley University. His academic journey enriches his understanding of how music can be a therapeutic tool, particularly in settings like hospice care. He is focused on developing his ability to engage with patients not only through music but also through conversation, recognizing the importance of holistic support in these sensitive environments.

Volunteering at Gilchrist has deepened my understanding of compassion and the unique role that music plays in the lives of those at the end of life. His experiences at Gilchrist, combined with his studies, are preparing him for a future where he hopes to continue using music to support and uplift others, particularly in healthcare and therapeutic settings. Daniel’s journey is a testament to the power of music to connect, heal, and bring comfort to those who need it most.

“I was inspired by the book The Selfless Act by Wanda Brunstetter, where I learned that the true impact isn’t always measured by immediate reactions like applause. Sometimes, silence or subtle responses can be just as meaningful. Volunteering with Gilchrist has taught me to value the moments of connection and impact, even when they don’t come with visible praise.” -Daniel Price
