Honoring Compassion and Care: November Is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

November 20, 2025, Gilchrist, Hospice, Palliative

Each November, Gilchrist joins hospice and palliative care organizations across the country in recognizing National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. This time is dedicated to honoring the people who bring comfort, dignity, and peace to those living with serious illness.

This year’s national theme, “We See the Whole You,” celebrates the heart of hospice and palliative care: the belief that every person is more than their diagnosis. At Gilchrist, we understand that caring for someone means looking beyond the illness to see the whole individual, including their story, relationships, goals, and what matters most to them.

At Gilchrist, our mission is to provide the best possible care to patients and families during life’s most difficult times. Whether care is provided at home, at one of our care centers, or in a senior living community, Gilchrist meets people wherever they are in their journey.

What Is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is for people with a life-limiting illness when a cure is no longer possible. The focus shifts from treatment to comfort, ensuring that every day is lived with as much quality and meaning as possible.

Gilchrist’s hospice team includes nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, volunteers, and physicians who work together to care for both patients and their families. This care includes managing pain and symptoms, offering emotional and spiritual support, and helping families make the most of their time together.

Hospice care can take place in a variety of settings, including a patient’s home, a nursing home, an assisted living community, or one of Gilchrist’s care centers. The goal is always the same: to help people live fully and comfortably surrounded by those they love so they may live life to the fullest.

How Can Hospice Help You or Your Loved One?

  • Hospice focuses on controlling pain and other symptoms and improving the quality of life.
  • Well-designed care plans help reduce the number of times someone has to go to the hospital.
  • The patient and family have access to health care experts 24 hours a day. There is always someone on call.
  • Education about disease advancement, caring for your loved one, and understanding the dying process. It is a time when families have many questions, and Gilchrist provides clear information to make informed decisions.
  • Patients maintain dignity and have a voice in care and treatment options.
  • Medications, medical supplies, and equipment are delivered to the home.
  • Hands-on personal care and hygiene from hospice aides.
  • Physical, emotional, social, and spiritual support.
  • Help with benefits, navigating the health care system, and decision making.
  • Possible respite care to give a family caregiver a break.

What Is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with serious illness, regardless of their diagnosis or stage of disease. It focuses on improving quality of life by relieving symptoms such as pain, fatigue, anxiety, or shortness of breath.

Unlike hospice, palliative care can be provided at the same time as curative treatment. It helps patients and families better understand their options and make informed decisions about their care. The Gilchrist palliative care team partners with hospitals, physicians, and community providers to ensure that every person receives the support they need. This care can begin at any time during an illness and often serves as an important bridge to hospice when the time is right. It is centered on the whole person, addressing not just physical needs but emotional and spiritual well-being as well.

Who May Need Palliative Services?

Anyone with a serious or chronic illness can benefit. For instance, palliative care can help people who have:

  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease (for example, COPD)
  • Cancer
  • Liver or kidney failure
  • Dementia, ALS, or other neurologic conditions

How Can Palliative Care Help You?

Our care team are experts in helping people deal with the uncertainties that come with serious illness. Most importantly, our team will:

  • Take time to understand your goals of care
  • Explain your medical condition and answer your questions
  • Help you understand how your illness may progress
  • Discuss treatment options
  • Treat your symptoms to give you the best quality of life
  • Engage in discussions about care options with your family
  • Offer support for your emotional needs
  • Help guide your family through the health care system

Seeing the Whole You

At Gilchrist, we see beyond illness. We see the whole person: their hopes, fears, values, and humanity. From the nurse who gently eases a patient’s pain, to the chaplain offering words of comfort, to the volunteer sitting quietly beside a loved one, every act of care reflects our belief that every moment matters.

As we honor National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, we celebrate the dedicated professionals and volunteers who make this compassionate care possible. They embody the spirit of this year’s theme: “We See the Whole You.” Learn more about hospice and palliative care at gilchristcares.org
