Honoring Gilchrist Doctors on National Physicians’ Day

March 28, 2025, Hospice, Physicians

Each year on March 30th, we celebrate National Physicians’ Day, a time to honor the dedication and contributions of physicians who tirelessly serve our communities. This observance dates back to 1933, when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, initiated the first celebration in Winder, Georgia, to recognize Physicians’ instrumental work.

At Gilchrist, our hospice, palliative, and geriatric care physicians play a pivotal role in providing compassionate and expert medical care to patients facing serious illnesses. Their dedication goes beyond treating symptoms—they bring comfort, guidance, and dignity to patients and their families during life’s most challenging moments.

What Do Physicians at Gilchrist Do?

Gilchrist physicians are an integral part of the interdisciplinary care team, working closely with nurses, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors, and volunteers to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Managing symptoms and pain relief to ensure comfort
  • Developing personalized care plans tailored to each patient’s needs
  • Providing emotional support and guidance for families
  • Facilitating difficult conversations about care choices and goals
  • Collaborating with the care team to uphold each patient’s dignity and quality of life

Being a physician at Gilchrist requires more than medical expertise—it calls for a unique blend of compassion, resilience, and dedication to caring for patients and families. Our physicians manage complex symptoms and provide emotional and spiritual support during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Reflecting on her role as a hospice physician, Dr. Charlotte Grinberg, Medical Director of Gilchrist Hospice Howard Inpatient Unit, shares, “I feel immense gratitude to be a hospice physician, caring for patients with the most complex medical and emotional needs alongside the most compassionate interdisciplinary teams in health care. Every day, I’m inspired by my incredible colleagues and reminded of the profound beauty and fragility of life.”

Celebrating Our Physicians

On National Physicians’ Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to all physicians, especially those at Gilchrist, for their tireless dedication, compassion, and expertise. Their work not only enhances the quality of life for our patients but also provides comfort and peace of mind for their families.

If you or a loved one has been impacted by the care and kindness of a Gilchrist physician, we encourage you to take a moment to thank them on this special day. Your words of appreciation mean the world to those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
