Honoring Nurses on National Nurses Week

Every year, the American Nurses Association designates May 6 through 12 as National Nurses Week to honor the strength, dedication and perseverance of nurses. Gilchrist is lucky to have many skilled and dedicated nurses who are invaluable to our organization.

Nurses touch the lives of our patients and families in countless ways. They develop relationships with families, ease the symptoms of the seriously ill and comfort loved ones. They collaborate with physicians and all members of the clinical team. Nurses also hold leadership positions, help shape policies and provide their expertise throughout Gilchrist.

Why Nursing

It takes a special person to become a nurse in our field, and every Gilchrist nurse has a reason why they chose this work. One Gilchrist nurse— LaTondria Spence—explains her “Why” and what being a hospice nurse means to her.

I enjoy being a hospice nurse. I enjoy the work that we encompass in meeting families. My own personal experience with a dying relative is what gave me the motivation to become a support for someone else. Of course, this discipline and specialty isn’t for every nurse. You definitely have to have a passion for what you do. But it makes me feel good knowing that I make a difference by being there, by supporting them, and hearing the echoes of patients saying, “thank you.” That means more to me than anything. Thank you for being there for me.

—LaTondria Spence, Gilchrist Hospice Nurse

Throughout the pandemic, our nurses have inspired us all with their continued dedication to patients and their commitment to excellence. Their contributions have been invaluable.

To all of our nurses, on behalf of Gilchrist and all the patients and families you have cared for, thank you for all you do.
