Bringing Comfort and Connection to Gilchrist Center Baltimore

At Gilchrist Center Baltimore, Pastor Earleen Henderson has become a vital source of warmth and comfort for patients, families, and staff alike. Since joining as a volunteer in April 2022, Pastor Earleen’s compassionate presence has gone far beyond the typical volunteer role, leaving a lasting impression on both the patients and staff. “Her gentle spirit instantly captivates everyone she meets,” reflects Gena Johnson, Volunteer Services Administrative Coordinator at Gilchrist.

Pastor Earleen arrives at the center every other Friday morning, ready to offer her time and heart to those in need. When extra support is required, she steps forward without hesitation, often saying, “You mentioned needing help, so here I am!” Known for her open-hearted approach, Pastor Earleen reaches out to patients, asking if she can sit with them, talk, and pray—a gesture that has never been declined. “Her genuine compassion is met with open hearts; I’ve never witnessed anyone turn down her heartfelt gestures,” says Gena.

Last year, Pastor Earleen was invited to join a patient and her family for a special Mother’s Day dinner. “There were eight of us; the food was delicious, we sang, prayed, and truly enjoyed each other’s company. They treated me like family,” Pastor Earleen recalls. This moment of connection illustrates her remarkable ability to make those around her feel valued and loved, enriching lives through her care and kindness.

A Special Bond with Ms. Evelyn

Among those Pastor Earleen has touched is Ms. Evelyn, one of the center’s cherished residents. Ms. Evelyn’s joyful spirit and gratitude shine brightly at Gilchrist Center Baltimore, blending naturally with Pastor Earleen’s compassionate presence. “The two share a special bond, evident from their first meeting,” Gena recalls. Their bond is a beautiful reminder of the deep connections that flourish within the caring community at Gilchrist.

Ms. Evelyn describes her time at Gilchrist as deeply fulfilling, often expressing her appreciation for the staff and volunteers she calls her “Gilchrist family.” “Whatever I need, they ensure I have it,” she says with a smile. During a recent conversation in the center’s foyer, Ms. Evelyn shared laughter and fond memories, recalling her love for sweets like Good & Plenty and candy corn, favorite films, and cherished family moments. She also spoke of her joy in spending time in the garden, where she encourages others to join her in enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, believing it lifts the spirit. “I’m happy,” Ms. Evelyn shares with a peaceful smile. “If God calls me home, I’ll leave feeling at peace and fulfilled.”

A Lasting Impact on Gilchrist

Pastor Earleen’s influence at Gilchrist goes far beyond her regular visits. Her dedication, compassion, and humility leave a lasting mark on each life she touches, and Gilchrist Center Baltimore is deeply grateful to have her as part of its volunteer family. Together, Pastor Earleen and Ms. Evelyn embody the profound impact of compassion and connection, reminding us that even in the most challenging times, kindness and joy can create a true sense of family and belonging at Gilchrist.
