Nursing Assistants Week is June 17–24. We are honoring Gilchrist’s hospice aides for their compassion and dedication to our patients and families.

During Nursing Assistants week, I would like to extend a huge “thank you” to our hospice aides here at Gilchrist. This year has been a year like no other, and they handled it with compassion and grace.

Our dedicated hospice aides provide hands-on care to patients at the end of life. They help create a safe and calming space for our patients and their families. And they do some of the most challenging tasks without complaint.

This past year, Gilchrist hospice aides provided this same care while in a mask, shield, gown and gloves. When some residential care facilities had to close their doors in the height of the pandemic, many of our hospice aides were redeployed to other roles within Gilchrist. Their jobs morphed into that of scheduler, COVID screener and safety buddy. Some prepared PPE kits. Others shifted to home care and inpatient units.

Our hospice aides showed great flexibility, moving from day shifts to nights and even weekends. Some stepped up to work on the COVID unit. They came to work every day with that same hard work and dedication, even when they were tired and weary—all while being COVID tested twice a week.

Gilchrist is proud to employ these compassionate caregivers who exceed everyone’s expectations day after day. Our patients, families and colleagues are so grateful for every sacrifice they made during this past year. Gilchrist could not do what we do without them. Join us in honoring Gilchrist’s hospice aides.
