A Heart for Service: Arham Alam’s Journey as a Gilchrist Volunteer
By: Gena Johnson, Volunteer Services Administrative Coordinator
At Gilchrist, we are honored to highlight the incredible individuals who dedicate their time and energy to our volunteer program, making a profound difference in the lives of our patients and families. One such remarkable volunteer is Arham Alam, whose warmth, compassion, and genuine desire to serve shine brightly in every interaction.
Born and raised in Georgia, Arham is a Senior at Johns Hopkins University with a dream of becoming a primary care doctor serving rural communities. With a diverse range of passions—from political organizing and personal training to his involvement with Men4Choice and tutoring projects—Arham’s life is a testament to his commitment to making the world a better place. He is also an Eagle Scout, a musician, and a proud Muslim, deeply rooted in his faith and heritage. Joining Gilchrist as a volunteer in May 2024, Arham has brought his boundless empathy and dedication to our community, touching the lives of staff, patients, and families alike.
Gilchrist Volunteer Program: A Lifeline of Care and Connection
Volunteers are the heart of Gilchrist, providing compassionate support that enriches the lives of our patients and families. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique skills, but they all share one common thread: a commitment to caring for others during life’s most challenging moments. Whether sitting at a patient’s bedside, sharing stories, or providing a listening ear, Gilchrist volunteers are essential to our mission.
Arham’s Journey of Impact and Connection
When Arham began volunteering at Gilchrist Center Baltimore, his enthusiasm and compassion quickly made an impression. “I began volunteering at Gilchrist Center Baltimore in early June,” Arham reflects. “One of the profound moments was spending time with Dolores, a truly wonderful person who seemed a bit dispirited. I sensed her need for a lift, so I shared with her some of my passions. We spent hours engrossed in The Hunt column from The New York Times and later started reading Victory City by Salman Rushdie. Although Dolores passed away before we could finish the book, the time we shared was precious, and I cherish those moments.”
Arham’s ability to connect with patients on a deep level extended to his bond with Ben, a patient living with Cervical Spinal Stenosis. Their friendship began over a simple cup of coffee, blossoming into meaningful conversations about their shared South Asian heritage. Through patience and attentive listening, Arham learned to understand Ben’s unique way of communicating, ensuring his thoughts and feelings were conveyed to others.
Sharmean Young, a Gilchrist team member with over 20 years of service, shares her admiration for Arham, stating, “He possesses the ideal combination of mannerism, attitude, and professionalism, all while radiating love, empathy, and exceptional listening skills. He truly has the makings of an outstanding doctor.”
Inspiring Through Care
Arham’s time at Gilchrist has left an indelible mark on everyone he has encountered. From his gentle curiosity and laughter-filled visits to his dedication to learning and growing, Arham exemplifies the spirit of service that defines Gilchrist volunteers. As he continues his journey toward becoming a physician, Arham’s experience at Gilchrist will undoubtedly shape his future, and we are proud to be a part of his story.
