A Journey of Love and Strength: The Jester Family’s Story
For more than five decades, Janet and Jim Jester have shared a life filled with love, resilience, and family. Today, their journey has led them to Gilchrist, where Jim receives compassionate hospice care at home.
A Life Well-Lived

Born at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Jim spent his early years on a dairy farm on the Eastern Shore, where life was simple but full of hard work and family bonds. When his family later moved to Baltimore, he carried those early lessons of resilience and determination with him. His parents, both deaf, met at the Frederick School for the Deaf, and though Jim never fully mastered sign language, he still finds himself instinctively using gestures from his childhood—a silent but powerful connection to his roots.

Jim joined the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1965. His dedication and discipline carried into his professional life, where he built a career defined by hard work and integrity—first as a truck driver for Davidson Transfer and Storage and later as a carpenter. He eventually retired from Worcester Eisenbrandt after years of crafting and building.
Jim and Janet’s love story began at a party hosted by mutual friends, and 56 years ago, they embarked on a lifelong journey together as husband and wife. Together, they raised two children: Jimmy and Joanne, in Baltimore County, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished traditions. Their family grew to include three grandchildren, each a reflection of the warmth and love that Jim and Janet built together.
Facing Loss Together
This past year has been one of profound loss for the Jester family. In October 2024, Janet and Jim’s son, Jimmy, entered hospice with Gilchrist at age 54 after a battle with uveal melanoma, a rare form of eye cancer that later spread to his liver and lungs. And only a short time later, on November 19, 2024, he passed away. His fight was courageous, and his family cherished every moment they had with him, even as they faced the heartache of his passing.

One of the most meaningful moments during Jimmy’s final months was the wedding of his son, Josh, to Ashley. Knowing he wouldn’t be able to attend the larger ceremony, Jimmy officiated a private wedding in his parents’ backyard, creating a cherished memory that his family will never forget. Jim was able to experience that joyous occasion and be surrounded by his wife, Beth, and their three sons in the comfort of home during his final days.
Now, just months later, Jim is on hospice care himself for the third time. Having already witnessed the compassionate and personalized care that Gilchrist provided for Jimmy, Janet knew without hesitation that hospice was the right choice for Jim as well. “It was such a relief knowing we had a team we could trust,” Janet shares. “Gilchrist helped us through one of the hardest times in our lives, and now they are here for us again.”
For Jim, staying at home was the most important thing—the same home where he and Janet have built over 30 years of memories together. With Gilchrist’s home care program, he is able to remain where he feels most comfortable, surrounded by the love of his family. Through love, loss, and resilience, the Jester family continues to lean on one another—and on Gilchrist— as they navigate this journey together.
The Comfort of Hospice Care

While the decision to enter hospice is never easy, Janet has found comfort in the care and support that Gilchrist provides. “I can call anytime, and someone is there to help,” Janet shares. “This journey is scary, and having someone to lean on makes all the difference. If you’re considering hospice, my advice is simple—just do it. The support you receive is life-changing.”
With Gilchrist’s hospice team, Janet doesn’t feel alone in caring for Jim. Whether it’s medical care, emotional support, or simply someone to call in the middle of the night, she knows she has a community surrounding her.
A Family’s Legacy
Through all of life’s challenges, one thing has remained constant for the Jester family—their love for one another. Their three grandchildren continue to bring them joy, carrying on Jimmy’s legacy. The family remains close, gathering to celebrate birthdays and milestones, just as they always have.
Reflecting on their 56 years of marriage, Janet says, “I don’t even know any other life—it’s just been Jim and the kids.”
As Jim continues his hospice journey, Janet remains steadfast in her love and devotion, fulfilling the promise she made to keep him at home. With the support of Gilchrist, their family is navigating this chapter with dignity, care, and the knowledge that Jim is surrounded by love.
