Gilchrist Jazz Brunch: A Special Event For A Special Place

Each year, Gilchrist holds a memorable Spring Jazz Brunch to benefit Gilchrist Center Baltimore. As the city’s only inpatient hospice, Gilchrist Center Baltimore is a remarkable place that serves hundreds of people in Baltimore every year, regardless of their ability to pay.

Care for Baltimore’s Most Vulnerable

Originally established as the Joseph Richey House in 1987, and renamed Gilchrist Center Baltimore in 2014 when the organization merged with Gilchrist, the home-like center at 828 N. Eutaw Street has provided adult hospice care for Baltimore City residents in addition to residential care for those who are unable to remain in their homes.

A large, highly trained team comprising doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, hospice aides, social workers, music therapists, chaplains and volunteers works in concert to serve the needs of everyone who needs care. Counselors attuned to cultural and religious beliefs are on hand to support all the patients and their families.

Gilchrist Center Baltimore also offers the only inpatient pediatric hospice in Maryland. With cozy individual rooms and play areas, children and young adults receive superb, compassionate attention from staff trained in pediatrics. As an additional service, families who are with their acutely ill children at home are offered brief respite stays at the center.

Serving All, Regardless of Ability to Pay

Gilchrist Center Baltimore provides vital services to many who could otherwise die alone on city streets or in the emergency room. For this under- and uninsured population, medical reimbursements do not cover the full cost of care.  As a nonprofit, Gilchrist must rely on fundraising events and the support of generous donors to make up the difference.

We also want to do even more for Baltimore. The current center, housed in two separate converted rowhomes that are more than 130 years old, needs continuing, expensive repairs that strain resources for patient care. Our goal is to improve conditions for Baltimore residents by building a new state-of-the-art Gilchrist Center Baltimore at Stadium Place in 2020. And that requires more fundraising.

Gilchrist’s upcoming Spring Jazz Brunch will give you an opportunity to join other supporters in helping to ensure that Gilchrist can continue its exceptional compassionate care

Scheduled for Sunday, April 28, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Museum on the Baltimore waterfront, the Spring Jazz Brunch is a wonderful opportunity to support these services that are needed so much by so many in Baltimore.
