Gilchrist’s Access Department: Your First Step in Finding Care and Support

April 2, 2025, Careers, Gilchrist Staff

For many, the word hospice can bring up feelings of fear, uncertainty, and even reluctance. Misunderstandings about what hospice care truly is—who it helps, when it should begin, and how it can support both patients and families often make people hesitant to reach out. Many believe hospice is only for the last days of life, that it means “giving up,” or that it is limited in the care it provides. In reality, hospice is about living as fully and comfortably as possible for as long as possible.

That’s why Gilchrist’s Access Department is so critical. As the first point of contact, the Access team provides compassionate guidance and clear information to individuals and families who are navigating difficult decisions. They reassure, educate, and connect people with the right services—whether it’s hospice, palliative care, geriatric care, or grief support.

What is the Access Department?

The Access Department is responsible for managing initial inquiries and facilitating the intake process for all of Gilchrist’s service lines, including:

  • Hospice Care
  • Palliative Care
  • Geriatric Care
  • Counseling and Support
  • Grief Services

This team ensures that individuals receive timely information and are connected to the appropriate services based on their unique needs.

Why is the Access Department Important?

As the first point of contact, the Access Department plays a crucial role as the gateway to Gilchrist’s compassionate care. By efficiently assessing and directing inquiries, the department ensures that patients and families receive the support they need and that every individual feels valued and supported from the very start of their journey with us.

Leading the Access Department is Ebony Brown-Sewell, who recently celebrated her 23-year anniversary with Gilchrist. Her extensive experience and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the department’s effectiveness and outreach. Reflecting on her role, Ebony shares,“We bring the hospice philosophy of care and the Gilchrist mission to our community on a daily basis. We are the patients’ and families’ first impression of Gilchrist. The work we do is very important and rewarding. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve others.”

Addressing Fears and Misconceptions

Many people hesitate to call because they fear hearing something they’re not ready for. The Access Department meets them with patience, empathy, and knowledge, offering:

  • Reassurance that seeking care is not about giving up, but about improving quality of life
  • Education on hospice and palliative care, so families can make informed choices
  • Personalized guidance tailored to each family’s unique needs
  • Compassionate support during what can feel like an overwhelming time

For many, that first call to Gilchrist is one of the hardest to make. The Access team understands this and provides a safe, judgment-free space to ask questions and explore options.
