Creating Moments of Joy: Support for Caregivers

February 16, 2025, Caregiving, Gilchrist

On National Caregivers Day, Gilchrist recognizes the dedication and tireless effort of caregivers who selflessly support their loved ones. We understand the emotional and physical demands of caregiving, and we are committed to providing the resources, encouragement, and support they deserve.

Caregiving is one of the most selfless and meaningful roles a person can take on. Across America, more than 53 million people provide unpaid care to family members, with nearly 1 in 5 adults stepping into this role. Whether caring for an aging parent, a spouse with a chronic illness, or a child with special needs, caregivers offer love, patience, and support—often at great personal sacrifice. While caregiving can be physically and emotionally demanding, it can also be a time to create meaningful moments of connection.

At Gilchrist, we understand the profound impact caregivers have, and we also recognize how important it is to foster joy in the midst of caregiving. Small, shared moments—watching a favorite movie, telling stories, or simply laughing together—can bring comfort and lasting memories.

Finding Connection in Simple Moments

The best moments often arise from the simplest activities. A simple act like watching a favorite movie together provides comfort, fosters conversation, and offers a joyful escape. For caregivers, sharing in these moments allows them to step away from the stress of daily responsibilities and just be with their loved one. “Recently, a mother (who was in our care) and her daughter simply watched Hallmark movies together. This gave them something uplifting to do, sparked conversations centered around living, loving, and laughing, and provided a happy escape from the harder aspects of caregiving and the end of life. These are now treasured memories for the daughter from a difficult time,” Laurel Freeman, a Gilchrist Clinical Counselor, shares.

Recording memories through storytelling, interviews, or scrapbooking can be a deeply fulfilling activity. Not only does it preserve a loved one’s legacy, but it also strengthens the bond between caregiver and patient, offering a chance to reflect on cherished experiences. “Another daughter spent months interviewing her mother using a book-making program that provided writing prompts. After her mother passed away, she completed the book and had multiple copies made for family members. The interviews gave her the opportunity to listen to stories, learn new things about her mother, and feel closer to her, deepening her appreciation for her mom. The finished books became a treasured way to share her mother’s legacy with loved ones, and she was deeply proud of her accomplishment.”

Ways to Support the Caregivers Around Us

Caregivers often put their loved ones’ needs before their own, but they also need support, encouragement, and moments of respite. If you know someone who is a caregiver, consider offering:

  • A listening ear – Sometimes, just being present and allowing them to talk can make a difference.
  • A small act of kindness – A home-cooked meal, an offer to run errands, or a simple handwritten note of appreciation can brighten their day.
  • A break – Volunteering to sit with their loved one for an hour or two so they can take a walk, read a book, or have a moment to themselves can be invaluable.
  • Encouragement to seek support – Whether through local respite care, a support group, or professional counseling, reminding caregivers to take care of their own well-being is essential.

Creating Joy in the Everyday

Caregiving is often a journey of love, patience, and deep connection. By embracing small but meaningful activities, caregivers can create moments of joy that will be treasured long after their loved one is gone. Whether through shared stories, a favorite film, or simple companionship, these moments provide comfort and connection amid life’s challenges.

At Gilchrist, we honor the dedication of caregivers and encourage everyone to show their appreciation for those who give so much. A small gesture of gratitude can go a long way in making a caregiver feel seen, valued, and supported.
